Song Years Chart
This page lists the biggest hit of each
year in
the 141 source charts. The
way that the various charts are combined to reach this final list is
described on the site generation page.
For years before 1950 the source data is quite sparse, so the results should
be treated with some caution. For years before 1920 there is so little source
data that the results are close to meaningless.
There are also a set of regional hit charts that
contrast success in North America and in Europe for many years. For this
analysis the UK is in Europe.

I believe it's a '60 Country Song
Song about a Soldier finding a little boy and asking his Captain if he couldkeep him, chorus went "Please Captain please let me keep little Mac, he won't take up much room in my pack, he's light as a feather up here on my back, please captain please let me keep little Mac"

Are RYM charts really not objective? Will you Update RYM and Accaim music if you can
The RYM charts were fairly bad when we sampled them. Since then they have been even more "gamed" by certain fans to promote certain acts. The Accalaimed site also suffers from the same issue.

Dan W. Quinn
When I looked at the lists for the early 1900s, I noticed Dan W. Quin appeared of them many times. From the looks of it, it seems that he's had countless hits, yet he's only ranked song artist #980. Can you explain this?
The number of charts where an artist was a hit also has an influence, we have very few charts from before 1920 so few artists from that era can claim to be worldwide hits

Will these lists ever stop moving?
I know the ones after 2000 are gonna keep adjusting for a while, but will some of the lists before 2000 ever stop readjusting?
As more evidence becomes available (or as names get refined) the listings get adjusted. The thing is that while it is clears that "Kung Fu Fighting" was a bigger hit than "Bennie & the Jets" it is less clear that "Every Breath You Take" was a bigger hit than "Billie Jean", further evidence (or refining the scoring) could swap the latter two quite easily.
Unfortunately we can't see any good way to list songs that says, for this year the biggest 5 hits are ... these 30 are about as big as each other. So we assign an annual order that becomes less meaningfull further down.
So the lists will keep adjusting as long as we keep looking.

2012
Sorry if you have been asked this before, but I am dying to know if we will see lists for 2012 soon.
Now that Steve is back from his travels (for a while) you can expect to see some progress. However we estimate the 2012 list will be "reliable" in about 2017

Song
What year did the song "Ruby" which Mel Tillis wrote for Kenny Rogers become a hit?
There are two different ways to answer that question here, one is to go to the list of top artists and find "Kenny Rodgers". The other is to look at the site index for the word "Ruby".
Either route will take you to the page listing Kenny Rodgers' songs. Which shows that the song "Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town" was a hit in 1969.
Johnny Darrell and Waylon Jennings both released versions before "Kenny Rogers & the First Edition" released it.
