Glenn Miller!
What is noticeable is that Glenn Miller is ranked very high, despite having alot shorter recording career than anyone else here. With Bing and Elvis it is understandable how they achieved so much success over a lot of decades. The fact that The Beatles have the same amount of numbers over one decade is unbelievable. But Glenn Miller had a recording career of less than four and a half years (because he went to the Army Air Force to modernize their band and improve morale of the troops) and has 23 Billboard number-one hits, one more than the Beatles achieved (in the United States). That sort of popularity over such a short period of time just amazes me. He should be the best chart act of all time when considering a short term basis. I think the placing here is accurate. Aren't those numbers impressive?
We have tried a number of different ways to calculate success, under some approaches Glenn Miller's standing in 1940-41 is the most outstanding musical feat of the 20th century.

Solo Hop by Glenn Miller on Billboard
What is your source for the chart position of Solo Hop by Glenn Miller in 1935? Is that from the actual Billboard publication? Where does that chart position of number seven come from? Was it on the pop charts? What chart was it one?
As we mention in the Song Charts page our Billboard positions come from the extrordinary spreadsheet put together by someone called "Bullfrog" and his friends. For some years they have been attempting to build the definitive listing of the Billboard charts from 1890 to the present day. Our current data is in the 20091219 version.
The dedication that the Bullfrog team have shown, and numerous tests of their data against other sources have demonstrated to our satisfaction that their assertions are accurate.
I know that in the 1930s Billboard published a number of different occasional charts. However which ones they were in 1935 and which publications they were contained in is a level of detail that even I don't have time to track down.
Given the fact that "Solo Hop" has a "Whitburn Number" of 1935_102 our guess would be that Bullfrog's source (for the number 7 peak) was one of Joel Whitburn's books and that he in turn got the information direct from the original Billboard magazines. But that's just a guess.
