Song artist 50 - Benny Goodman

Benny Goodman Region Profile

Benny Goodman Chart Profile

This page lists the song chart entries of Benny Goodman. The songs are listed with the most widely successful first.

Many of the hits credited to Benny Goodman were actually sung by Martha Tilton, Peggy Lee, Helen Forrest, Mildred Bailey, Dick Haymes, Helen Ward, Ella Fitzgerald, Art Lund, Louise Tobin, Eve Young, Lillian Lane, Johnny Mercer, Margaret McCrae, Liza Morrow, Dottie Reid, Jane Harvey, Jack Teagarden, Jimmy Rushing, Betty Van, Lionel Hampton, The Sportsmen, Ray Hendricks, Billie Holiday, Anna Graham, and even Benny Goodman. Also some hits credited on this site to those artists were sung with Benny Goodman's Orchestra.

Before 1958 the informal Billboard charts often listed songs without crediting artists (because the focus was sheet music sales rather than records) or they list band leaders without vocalists or vocalists without band leaders. In order to be consistent some of the songs have been assigned to band leaders or artists (based on entries in the Billboard and other charts). There is no way to be both consistent and to reflect the artists credited on the record labels, where a choice has had to be made we have attempted to opt for consistency. If you find a listing that could be made clearer by changing the associated artist please tell us about it.

#56 - Every Time We Say Goodbye

This also made the Billboard Charts - #12 - 3 weeks. Per Joel Whitburn Title is shown as 'Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye'. Vocalist is Peggy Mann.

That was listed as a Peggy Mann song, however since it is the only Peggy Mann song we've changed it to Benny Goodman, thanks

#127-You Brought A New Kind Of Love To Me

The title of this song should read "You Brought A New Kind Of Love To Me (not "You Bought").

Data fixed, thanks

Moon Glow #7 & #10

Thanks for separating these (2) Benny Goodman recordings. Still one more thing. On #7, the Chart Entry of Pop 4 of 1934 needs to be removed from here (the 1936 version) and transferred to #10 (the 1934 version)

Thanks.

Data fixed, thanks

(2) Double Listings

#19 (Idaho) should be combined with Dick Haymes (currently #24 on his page). #80 (Take Me) should be combined with Dick Haymes (currently #28 on his page). Haymes was lead singer on these Goodman recordings.

Data fixed, thanks

#22 - I Let A Song Go Out Of My Heart

This recording should be combined with the Martha Tilton song of the same name(currently #2 on her Song Artist page). Per Joel Whitburn she was the lead singer on this Benny Goodman recording.

Data fixed, thanks

15 May 2015

#114 - I Don't Know Enough About You

I wonder if this chart entry should be transferred to Peggy Lee version (currently #10 on her page). Her version was a much bigger hit than this Benny Goodman version.

She left Benny Goodman's Band in 1943, so by 1946 it is likely that it should be properly credited. However she did write the song (and play with Benny Goodman occasionally for 1943-1948). So we suspect your attribution is correct, we've changed the data, thanks

#92 - Perfidia

You have this listed as Tonight (Perfidia). It should actually be Perfidia (Tonight). This would add it to Song Title #867. Per Joel Whitburn this also made the US Billboard charts (#11 - 1 week).

Data fixed, thanks

Benny Goodman

There are (2) different recordings of Moonglow (#1 in 1934). This one and a 1936recording by Benny Goodman Quartet. The 1936 version was awarded the Grammy Hall of Fame, not this one.

Thanks for clarifying that, but we're not sure how to make that clear in the data (other than including this message on all the pages where this is mentioned)

Let's Dance

My Dad has asked me to find a Benny Goodman CD with the song 'Let's Dance'. I would like to find this in time for my Dad's 95th birthday. +Is there more than one album with this piece? +Any help would be appreciated. + Thanks, Marnie

We list the hits of Benny Goodman but don't sell CDs or music files.

"Let's Do It" not listed?

While I was visiting your site, I've noticed that "Let's Do It" is not listed. It was a huge hit for Benny Goodman in late 1941 and it was the first charted hit featuring his new vocalist Peggy Lee. It was also Goodman's first OKEH record, (the flip side was an instrumental titled, "The Earl"). But there's something unusual about Let's Do It. There were two completely different versions from two different recording dates issued, and they were both issued at the same time with the same catalog number on 78rpm, creating some confusion. Both versions were later reissued by Columbia on a Goodman/Peggy Lee CD in 1993. So we can now assume that both versions were hits? +

Our sources don't have a song called "Let's Do It" as a hit for either Goodman or Lee (or for anyone else in the 1940s)

The Billboard listing has Bing Crosby's "Let's Do It (Let's Fall in Love)" in 1929 and The Staple Singers' "Let's Do It Again" in 1975. Nothing with that text in between them

19 & 67 Somebody Else is Taking My Place

These two entries are the same recording - Benny Goodman with Peggy Lee doing the vocal. It charted at # 1 in 1942 then was reissued in 1948 and charted at # 30.

For a confirmation of these two listings being the same recording see The Big Band Discography 1917-1942 by Brian Rust. He only lists recordings made up until the Musician's Union strike in 1942, but lists all known reissues of each recording as of the date of his research. Pop Memories 1890-1954 by Joel Whitburn also states that the Columbia is a re-issue of the Okeh recording.

You are clearly correct. We would normally list this under Peggy Lee, however the reissue in 1948 makes it more complex, we'd like to note the reissue in some way (rather than adding its weeks on to the 1942 release).

So we think the best course is to change the 1942 entries to Peggy Lee and the 1948 ones to Benny Goodman and make sure this note is posted on both artist's pages so interested users can see what we've done.

An interesting case, thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Probable Duplicate

#19 and #67 Are probably the same song. Peggy Lee sang vocal on Benny Goodman's 1942 "Somebody Else is Taking My Place" if my memory serves me.

In the Bullfrog list there are two separate songs (with Prefx numbers of 1948_211 and 1942_033) one has a label of "Okeh 6497" the other has "Columbia 38198". We suspect that your suggestion that Peggy Lee sang vocals on both is correct (the 1948 release explicitly mentions her but, in the Bullfrog list the 1942 version only has "Benny Goodman & His Orchestra" listed).

As you know the informal Billboard charts before 1958 often listed songs without crediting artists (because the focus was Sheet music sales rather than records) or they list band leaders without vocalists or vocalists without band leaders. This has led to a number of confusing situations where the same song is credited to different combinations in different charts. Unfortunately every way to fix this challenge causes some other issues, we try and keep as close to the true history as possible while being as consistent as we can be in our approach. We've added a note to Benny Goodman's and Peggy Lee's page to mention this, however after reviewing the original Bullfrog list we decided that the best option is to leave the data as it is.

Despite the fact that on this occasion we're not going to make the alteration you suggest we would like to thank you for your input. It is the vigilance of users like you that helps improve the quality of data on this site.
