Dear Hearts and Gentle People
Did Billy Cotton and his band record this song? According to one source it wasa #1 hit in 1950.
In 1950 many charts only listed the song, not the artist. We've tried to find extra sources to confirm the artists but may have missed some.

Most successful artist of the 1950s?
Hello, I used the most recent data for all artists of the 50s and came to theconclusion that frank Sinatra was a more successful artist in this decade than elvis yet this page still has elvis a first place. Either this page is outdated or I am doing something wrong. Can you please help me? Thanks
There are various ways to combine scores to work out the artist of the decade. Some of these will suggest Elvis, others Sinatra. Look at the FAQ "Who was the world's biggest music act of all time?", and have a play with some of the parameters. Our guess would be that your calculation either focuses more on the US charts (i.e. uses the raw numbers rather than attempting to correct for that bias), or has a different weighting between number one songs and lower positions than ours does, or puts a different emphasis on albums.
Either way your calculation is liable to be just as valid as ours. Suggesting that Sinatra was the top artists of the 1950s is, we think, quite a reasonable viewpoint.

I have a question
What is the title of a song--and who sang it--from probably the 50s that had the lyrics "This is the story of a boy and a girl, they both lived together in their own private world. The boy's name was Billy, the girl's name was [can't remember her name], once it happened, one day they took a chance. +I took a walk with [girl's name], along the avenue of love and romance etc."
Does anyone know that one?

I have a question+
Who was the top 2 most successful musician between the years 1946 and 1955. Thanks
The CSV file gives you the information you need to answer that question.
Based purely on songs the top 5 artists of the period you ask about are (in order): Nat King Cole, Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, Frankie Laine and Eddie Fisher (on the 2.3.19 data)
However if you take albums into account, and assuming albums are twice songs, the top two are Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole
So the answer depends on how you want to combine the scores, our best guess would be Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole but with the details in the CSV file you might come to a different conclusion.

Billy Fury's hit was in 1964.
It was also a hit for Vic Dana (1962), Dean Martin (1965) and The Beatles, but all in the early 1960s

Buffalo Gals Buffalo gals, won't you come out tonight, come out tonight, come out tonight? Buffalo gals, won't you come out tonight, and dance by the light of the moon. I danced with a gal with a hole in her stocking and her knees kept a-knocking and her toes kept a-rocking. I danced with a gal with a hole in her stocking and we danced by the light of the moon. Would it be possible for you to supply a list of the First British Pop Chart of 14th November 1952 please?

There are other sites like chartarchive.org that hold that data, if you search for "15/11/1952" on that site you will get what you want.

"Bimbo"
Trying to recall a song from about 1955 which I think was simply named "Bimbo". Don't know the artist. Anyone have any clues?
If you search for Bimbo in the search box at the top right you will find:
Jim Reeves - "Bimbo" (1954) "US CashBox 25 - Jan 1954 (4 weeks), US Billboard 26 - Jan 1954 (1 week), RYM 95 of 1953"
Eddy Howard - "Bimbo" (1953) "US CashBox 23 - Dec 1953 (9 weeks)"
We suspect that it is the Jim Reeves version you are thinking of

1950's song, 'Water'+
Trying to find a song for a friend and would very much appreciate your help. All he remembers is that it would have been released around 1950-1955. The song includes a line from the beautiful poem, 'There's water water everywhere and not a drop to drink'. Was definitely a male singer and my friend thinks the title was water...
Thank you
The "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" has inspired a number of songs (for example one by Iron Maiden).
The following artists had a hit song called just "Water": Geno Washington & The Ram Jam Band - 1966; The Who - 1973; Rose Royce - 1976; Martika - 1990. None of them seem to work.
There are a few songs from the 1950s that have water somewhere in the title: Frankie Laine "Cool Water" - 1955; Henri Rene "The Water Tumbler Tune" - 1955; Lonnie Donegan "Bring A Little Water Sylvie/Dead Or Alive" - 1956; Gisele MacKenzie & Helen O'Connell "Water Can't Quench The Fire Of Love" - 1952; Howlin' Wolf "I Asked for Water (She Gave Me Gasoline)" - 1956; Peppermint Harris "Middle of Water" - 1951; Soul Stirrers "Jesus Gave Me Water" - 1951.
However, especially since you come from a Commonwealth country, we think you are after Tommy Steele's song "Water Water" from 1957.
8 Sep 2011
song identification?
I only remember part of the song: "How high's the water mama? 6 feet high and rising. How high's the water papa?" I've had this stuck in my head for years! Can you identify?
The song actually is "Five Feet High & Rising" which was written by Johnny Cash (apparently based on his childhood home in Arkansas which was flooded twice).
Cash had a minor hit with the song in 1959.
23 Nov 2010
i guess i'll be on my way
who sang this song in the mid-fifties?
The song "I Guess I'll be On My Way" was a hit for Woody Herman in 1942. No one else had a hit with that exact title in any of the charts we have.
The closest songs we have are "Dream Along With Me (I'm On My Way To a Star)" by Perry Como which was a hit in 1956, "I'm On My Way" by the Highwaymen in 1962 and "I'll Be on My Way" by Billy J Kramer & The Dakotas in 1963.
It is likely that someone covered the Woody Herman song in the 50s but didn't have a hit with it.

Extended Tables
Hi there...
Is there any possiblity for you to extend the tables by decade?
Mainly since the 60's... As it is (100) don't you feel like some other hits are missing? I Know they aren't but i just miss them in the chart! :) Thanks for your great Work!
We could extend the number of entries in the decade charts, but that would make the pages always take longer to load and most users are, we think, only interested in the top few songs anyway.
However, you can, of course, work out the decade positions from our CSV file with any spreadsheet program. For example in Excel load the file, add a decade column by setting cell N2 as "=INT(D2/10)*10" then copy that cell for all the N column and sort by type, decade and score (high to low).
This is why we supply the CSV file, not only can you work out which song was number 200 of the sixties but you can try out all sorts of different ways to analyse the data. If you find anything interesting tell us about it.

AMAZING!
This list is just that, amazing. And about the most honest as well. Just aboutall my favorites are listed here. One or two gems that didn't make it in my very unhumble opinion. Perhaps I will fill you in at a future time. BUT truly amazing what you have created. Even flip sides of singles are given their place, even if they didn't chart. I take my hat off to you
Thank you

Song:- 'Little Things Mean A Lot'
Trying to find the full lyrics to this. Needed TOMORROW for 70th Birthday celebrations! Any/All help appreciated.
The cycle time at this site is such that there is no chance we could find lyrics for tomorrow.
On this site you can find that Kitty Kallen had a big hit with the song in 1954. That in turn should be enough to find the song on most lyric sites, for example on lyricwiki it is at:
