International One Hit Wonders
To qualify as a "One Hit Wonders" an act has to have a single
song in as many charts as possible, a second hit anywhere would
disqualify them. There are plenty of
acts that only had a single hit in a particular market, for example in the US Nena
with "99 Red Balloons", however she also had plenty of
hits in her own country, so she clearly doesn't qualify here. The second issue
is that there must be a way to compare hits across the years, from say the 1940s and
the 1970s.
The consolidated data gives
us a list of the acts that have only
had a single song in the international charts. A simple summing of
their scores would just tell us in which years we have lots of
source chart information, so the scores are adjusted (in the same way as they
are for the greatest songs list) to take into account
the total number of input chart entries in each
year. The result is shown above, each dot represents a song. The bigger scores
show the most successful. Clearly one song (from 1986) stands out.
One question is which decade has the highest proportion of these type of hits. If we
work out the percentage of all entries that qualify for each decade we have the
blue bars above. As can be seen the propotion of the entries that qualify as
"One Hit Wonders" has
been increasing steadily since the 1950s and clearly the charts since
2000 have been the "best" (or is that "worst") decade
for them. Part of this is, of course, is the fact that any act that had its first hit in
2005 may not have
had enough time to get a second hit, but even taking that into account the 2000s rate
seems high.
The shorter bars show the proportion of the acts that are in the highest
scoring 1000 entries. For the 1920s and 1930s the small number of chart entries
results in most of the acts being in this high scoring group. The 1990s were
clearly characterised by having lots of easily forgotten one-off hits.
This statistic seems to indicates that the
most memorable "one hit wonder" songs are from the 1970s,
1960s and 1950s.
So here it is, the list of the 200 most widely internationally successful one hit wonders
from the last 100 years.

It seems there are three main categories of act that qualify:
- Acts specially created for a single song, for example "USA For Africa"
- Duets or trios of otherwise successful acts that came together for a song, for example
David Bowie & Mick Jagger.
- True "One hit Wonders" that recorded just a single success, such as
"Hot Butter".

Should these be removed from here?
Since this is a list of the Top 200 International One Hit Wonders I feel thefollowing (17) entries should be removed as they all have (2) or more charted recordings. 1. #2 - Les Brown & Doris Day, 2. #4 - Al Dexter & Troopers, 3. #6 - P. Diddy & Faith Evans, 4. #20 - Debbie Boone (should be Debby Boone), 5. #21 - Tex Williams (& Western Caravan), 6. #23 - Harry Richman, 7. #27 - Seven Dwarfs, 8. #34 - Dick Ames (should be Dick Haymes), 9. #40 - Arthur Gibbs (& His Gang), 10. #46 - Frankie Trumbauer (& Orch.), 11. #93 - Johnny Mathis & Deniece Williams, 12. #103 - Boswell Sisters, 13. #105 - Red Ingle (& Natural Seven), 14. #110 - Gid Tanner (& Skillet Lickers), 15. #115 - Jacques Renard (& Orch.), 16. #145 - Doris Day & Frankie Laine, 17. #188 - Wendell Hall. Your Thoughts? +
We think you are completely correct. This will be fixed when the page is regenerated
26 Feb 2016
#198 - Art Landry - Dreamy Melody
This entry should be removed from here as 'Art Landry & Orch.' have several other songs that have also charted.
Will be fixed when the page is regenerated
26 Feb 2016
#193 - Ted Williams - Lazybones
This should be removed from here as the Song Artist for 'Lazybones' should be Ted Lewis & Orch. (not Ted Williams).
You are correct, but since this generated from the 1.8 version of the data it has a number of those type of errors. When we regenerate it the entries will be fixed
26 Feb 2016
#192 - Red Norvo - Says My Heart
This should be removed from here as Red Norvo & Orch. had dozens of hits.
You are correct. But, this page was generated with the 1.8.0036 data (at which time there were listings for Red Norvo and Red Norvo & his Orchestra)
When we redo the calculation the entry will be fixed.

"A Song of Joy"
There is a Miguel Rios song "A Song of Joy", that you list as the 23rd biggest hit of 1970, higher than The Jackson 5's "ABC", Santana's "Black Magic Woman", or Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Child", yet it is not listed here.
Did he have other charting singles? Because you have not made a page on your site for him
We only have pages for the top 1000 song artists. He did have some other hits but none that were as widespread: "Bienvenidos" (1982), "El blues del autobus" (1982), "El rock de una noche de verano" (1983), "Jugando a vivir" (1981), "No estas sola" (1983), "Santa Lucia" (1980), "Todo a pulmon" (1984), "Like An Eagle" (1971), "No sabes, como sufri" (1970),

one hit wonder
the singing nun - "Dominique" - 1963
The Singing Nun (Soeur Sourire) fails to qualify since she also had a hit with "Entres Les Etoiles"
