The original title of the song was "Babe, I Hate to Go", as featured on his1966 studio album John Denver Sings, (wikipedia). So 1966.
You have obviously not looked at the FAQ about years. The year listed here is the year the song was in the charts (not the year of release, which we don't have for most songs). The title is that in the chart (even when its wrong).
If you look at the Wikipedia page for "Leaving on a jet plane" you will see that John Denver was convinced by Milt Okun to change the title after it was on the album. Under that name Peter, Paul and Mary had their biggest (and last) major hit. So most people will know it by that title.
