Started with various groups like Sallyangie (with his sister Sally Oldfield), Barefoot and The Whole World before coming up with a solo project. His concept was rejected by a succession of record companies before the newly formed Virgin label picked it up. "Tubular Bells" was such a success that the label's founder (Richard Branson) used the proceeds to fund other things. He employed a variety of vocalists, from Vivian Stanshall (of The Bonzo Dog Band) for "Tubular Bells", Roger Chapman (of Family) for "Shadow On The Wall" and Jon Anderson and Bonnie Tyler for "Island".
